Jaguars Make Bold Draft Day Move, Trade Up for No. 2 Pick
The NFL's youngest general manager has made the draft's first major power play. James Gladstone, just 34 years old, has orchestrated a blockbuster trade that will reshape the top of the draft board, with the Jacksonville Jaguars acquiring the No. 2 overall pick from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for the No. 5 selection and additional assets, according to ESPN.
This aggressive maneuver bears all the hallmarks of Gladstone's mentor, Les Snead, and appears targeted at securing two-way phenom Travis Hunter once the Tennessee Titans officially select quarterback Cam Ward with the first overall pick.
The football world has witnessed a dramatic shift in Jacksonville's draft strategy over recent days. Previous indications suggested the Jaguars were leaning toward bolstering their offense with standout running back Ashton Jeanty if they remained at No. 5. However, the opportunity to land a transcendent talent like Hunter proved too tempting to resist.
GIVING UP THE FARM WAS PROBABLY WORTH IT
The Browns traded the second overall pick, a fourth-round pick (No. 104) and a sixth-round pick (No. 200) to the Jaguars. In return, the Jaguars sent the No. 5 overall pick, a second-round pick (No. 36), a fourth-round pick (No. 126) and their 2026 first-round pick to the Browns.
Cleveland's willingness to move down comes as a surprise to many draft analysts, particularly considering the widespread belief that only Hunter and edge rusher Abdul Carter represent truly "can't-miss" prospects in this draft class.
Hunter's extraordinary versatility makes him one of the most intriguing prospects in recent memory. The Heisman Trophy winner logged over 700 snaps on both offense and defense during his remarkable 2024 campaign at Colorado and has expressed his desire to continue as a two-way player at the professional level.
Browns GM Andrew Berry had previously drawn comparisons between Hunter and MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani, making Cleveland's decision to trade out of position to draft him all the more unexpected.
Ultimately, this was a typical Cleveland Browns move, which the team and its fans will probably end up regretting.
